Can I trust you?

WHAT IS TRUST?

Seth Godin remains one of my favorite writers of all time. If you follow him and read my writing, you will realize how my writing is highly influenced by his style. Short impactful sentences, always leaving you with a powerful thought.

One of Seth's most impactful blogs is about trust. And it goes as:

Trust isn't about knowing that nothing will go wrong. Instead, trust is about knowing that if things do go wrong, you would have done everything to prevent it and will do everything to fix it.
It is during these hard times, when no one expects you to show up, that trust gets built.

Most of us (assuming most of us are Indians) were raised with a lack of trust.
We grew up being told "daal mein kuch kaala hai" (something is suspicious).
We were always on our guard.
Heck, each time we ordered something from the local shop/restaurant and then called to check the status of the delivery. irrespective of what time we called we ALWAYS got one response
"Ladka nikal gaya hai" (the boy has left!)

So, we have trust issues.
And it is hard for us to trust others easily.

Which is why - IF you act in a way that people can trust you, YOU ARE GOLD, MY FRIEND!

And Seth's blog above, is the key to that.
Show up, when people do not expect you to.

Be there for the friend, when everyone else has left.
Be there for the company, when everybody has moved on.
Be there for your parents, when you are still busy in your life.
Be there for your partner, even at their worst.
And last of all, be there for yourself, even when you feel there is no reason to.

It is tragic that this is precisely when most people abandon ship.

It baffles me how many true faces of employees emerge during their notice period.
It stuns me how many friends become ashamed of their friends, as they get new ones.
It shocks me how many people become their worst enemies when they have been defeated.

Remember that life is short.
You are going to run into the same people again.
And the taste you left in them when you did not show up, will be their lasting image of you.
Or the gratitude they have for you because you showed up when least expected, will be their forever image of you.

It is your call.

BOOK I AM READING THIS WEEK

I am still reading Pre-Suasion: A Revolutionary Way to Influence and Persuade because it is worthy of a slow read. Such amazing insights into how to persuade people.

For example:
Imagine your manager asks you to do some work that you do not want to do. Only 33% would agree to doing the work, if they had a choice to say no.
However, if your manager starts with "I love how helpful you are" and then asks you to do the work, 76% would say yes.
Your manager has basically tricked you into agreeing, by sharing a point of view about yourself that you now feel obliged to uphold.

Simple, but so effective.

My book DO EPIC SHIT touched sales of 1,20,000+ which is frankly unbelievable for me. If you haven't read it till now, you can consider ordering it here :)

QUOTES TO SHARE

Confidence isn’t about thinking you are the best. It is about not needing to compare yourself with anybody else.

Eventually, every role ends up being about managing people. Every role.

Writing is the slowest form of expression. And that is why it works. When you write, you train yourself to pace your thoughts and select the most powerful one from all the thoughts that co-exist in that moment.

RESPONSES TO LAST WEEK'S QUESTION

Last week I asked you:

Which of these do you use the most?

  1. YouTube
  2. Netflix/Amazon Prime/Sony Liv
  3. Instagram
  4. Spotify

Here are the responses:

Observations:

  1. OTTs are a thing only as you get older (maybe because they are paid).
  2. YT is killing it across age groups!
  3. Super surprised at ~10% Spotify presence, which tells me that music is a far more important thing than I assumed.
  4. IG is low first, peaks in the 20s then dips down. But still quite significant.

I am intrigued to know what do people across ages use YT for?
I know the younger population uses it as a university, while older for entertainment.

What do you use it for?

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

Received this message from my class teacher, who has played a defining role in my life. And it made my entire week :)))
THIS, in my opinion, is success!

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Which one do you prefer?

  1. Summer season
  2. Winter season
  3. Both are ok

Do you have the right tools? Sometimes, I get these cute DMs: "Ankur, your pics are looking awesome. Which phone do you use?" "Ankur, your videos are so sharp. Which camera do you use?" "Your voice sounds so clear and deep. Which mic do you use?" "You have been meditating for so long without fail, which app do you use?" Makes me smile :)) It's the equivalent of me asking someone, "Your book was wonderful. Which pen did you use?" A lot of us are stuck in the wait for the right tools. The right...

I had to ask! When I met my current wife, Ruchi, at the age of 19 while in college, she was way out of my league! I was the super geeky and serious kid.I had strong notions about what is right and wrong.I was too uptight.I would even call myself sad at that point.Too serious. And took myself too seriously. She, on the other hand, was the Shahrukh Khan in everybody’s life.Happy and going with the flow :))Forever smiling.Everyone adored her.Her happiness made everyone else happy around her. We...

If it's just hard work, why wouldn't you do it? Our colony had the Tennis Singles Finals this morning. I lost. While I feel slightly bad about it, I am happy about 2 things: 1/ I didn't play it safe. I played aggressively and took my chances. It's another thing that most chances did not work out :)) But I tried! 2/ I know exactly where I went wrong and what I need to do to fix it. The distance between where I am and where I wish to be can be covered by hard work. You see, a lot of us are...
